What Happens After You Complain?
Once you send your complaint to the lender's email address, they must acknowledge it within 5 working days. They then have up to 8 weeks to investigate and send you a final response. If they find that a discretionary commission was paid without proper disclosure, they must calculate and offer you compensation.
If the lender rejects your complaint or does not respond within 8 weeks, you have the right to escalate your case to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) free of charge.
Not Sure Which Lender You Had?
Many people do not remember the name of their car finance lender. The dealer arranges the finance, so you may only recall the dealership. Here are some ways to find out:
- Check your credit report (free via Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion)
- Look for old statements or letters from a finance company
- Check your bank statements for direct debit payments to a finance provider
- Contact the dealership and ask which lender they used
